Chattanooga Library, Bookins.com Offer Economic Entertainment Options

Chattanooga, TN-
Paula Ables loves to read. She averages two books every ten days, an expensive hobby if you pay retail. "If you go to the bookstore your going to pay about $21 for a hardback and $8 or $9 for a paperback," says Ables.
So, she uses Bookins.com, a website where customers trade-in old books for points. Ables says she "hates to shop, I'd rather order stuff online and do this."
Every book costs $4.49, but the more points you earn from trade-ins, the better the selection of books available to buy. With the economy floundering Ables says she's "been sending out quite a few books lately, you know. I've got quite a variety."
Also getting a boost during the tough times, the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library. David Clapp, Director, says "we're doing better than we've done since 1994 because people are checking out all the materials. They're coming to libraries in droves."
These days, the library features language learning programs, books on mp3s, and a line of classic, current, and educational DVDs. Some of the newer releases carry a rental fee, which covers the cost of updating materials here at the library, but after about 6 months, they join the general population for checkout.
Nearly 130,000 residents now carry a library card, up nearly 7,000 since 2007 and 30,000 since 2003. Clapp says "they were just used to being in the commercial set of things going to amazon or netflix to do this, they're now finding ways to economize."
