Registering
Try to re-enter your address without any periods, or special characters. If you are registering with a business name, try putting it in the second address line, not the first. If that does not work, contact us with your complete address. We will help figure it out.
Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate shipments outside the U.S. at this time. Our website uses a new US Postal Service prepaid postage system. It does not yet allow for international shipments. When they update their technology we will do the same.
Please click login at the top right of our site. Enter your email address and password you selected. You will be taken back to where you left off during registration.
Sorry, you cannot. The requirement for collecting a credit card (or debit card) comes from the post office. We provide prepaid postage using their systems, and they ask that we collect a credit card as a form of ID. This is in case anyone tries to abuse the postage system. Your card will only be used for a $4.49 shipping charge per item you receive.
Swapping sites have been available online for years. Bookins is the first to create a hassle-free trading experience by combining automation, convenience, and great customer service. No other trading site provides postage, tracks all shipments, or pays to send you replacements if you are unhappy with an item you get. If you have limited time, and would like to spend it relaxing instead of chasing down shipments, then put Bookins to work for you.
You should receive your first item within 10 days of joining. Keep a good selection of stuff on your want list to make sure our system can contact several people if necessary to ensure quick delivery.
Want List
Your want list contains books and DVDs you would like to receive. Browse the site to see items available from other members. Pick those you want by clicking "Want". As you earn points, the system automatically contacts members and arranges shipments to you. If one person is not ready to ship, we'll ask another, then another, and so on. For fastest delivery, keep a large selection on your want list.
You will get whichever book or DVD on your want list is available first. Remember, Bookins is a person-to-person exchange. Our automated system may contact several members offering various items you've selected in order to ensure quickest delivery.
You will get an email from us letting you know an item has shipped. There will also be an "In transit" message next to the item on your want list.
Items on your want list can be in your hands in as little as 10 days. The more stuff you select, the more members the system can contact to arrange for a quick shipment. On the flip-side, if you add just one book or DVD to your want list, the person offering that item could go on vacation, and it could take a while. To ensure quick delivery keep a good selection on your list.
Netflix (the DVD by mail company) is a great example of a company that can do an order queue well, since their inventory is in warehouses all over the country. The challenge we face, is we cannot force anyone to ship. For example, if you select book A, and the person or persons offering book A are not around to respond to your request, then you may wait for a while (or forever, if for some reason the person offering the book is never able to ship!). We suggest you add a few selections to your want list. If you are like most members, once you get into the swing of things, you'll enjoy the surprise of getting an email from us saying which book or DVD is on its way.
You will see the message "backorder" next to titles that are reserved for you. This means either i) they have been traded since you added them to your want list, and other members are currently enjoying them; or ii) you added them to your want list by using the Amazon search feature. When these titles are offered for trade, the "backorder" message will be removed, and you will get priority to receive them.
If you feel that a book you receive is in poor-condition or damaged, or if a DVD is not playable, contact us within seven days to ask for a credit to your account. This should be done by filling out our simple complaint form. It will result in you getting credit, and we will contact the shipper to make them aware of the issue. We will also flag the shippers' account, if they continue to ship items that others complain about, they will be weeded out of the system.
Search Amazon without leaving our site. The books & DVDs you find can be ordered directly from Amazon, or saved to your Bookins want list for when they become available here.
Receiving
Our automated system will get you the books and DVDs you want. No need to contact anyone, or take any actions other then adding items to your want list. Once you start trading, you can expect a constant flow of shipments. The most effective way to use our system is to keep a good selection of items on your want list. That way, our system can contact several members if necessary in order to arrange shipments to you.
Most members are considerate, and send books in good shape. However, if you get a book you feel is not up to standards, fill out the simple complaint form on our site. We'll make it a priority to get you a replacement on us. Or, if you prefer, we will simply provide credit so you may get another selection. We will also contact the shipper to make them aware of the issue. If they continue to ship books that others complain about they will be weeded out of the system.
We will provide credit and try to get you another copy. In some cases we may ask you to return the DVD to us, at our expense. To file a complaint, go to My Account > Our Quality Guarantee.
The average shipment takes 10 days. This is from the time you get a message saying a book or DVD is on its way, until it arrives in your mailbox. If your shipment has gone past this time, contact us. We will follow-up with the shipper, and provide credit to you if there is a problem.

Points
Points are used to track the value of items you put into the system. For example, if you trade in a 10 point book you can get two 5 point books in return, a 10 point DVD in return, or save up for a 20 point item, or any combination. Our system automatically determines fair point values for all books and DVDs.
Our system automatically assigns point values to each item. New releases, best sellers, popular titles, award winners and classics are worth more points. Less popular and inexpensive items are worth less.
Our system will automatically redeem your points for items on your want list. You do not need to get in touch with other members or take any action whatsoever. If the first person we contact is not ready to ship to you, we'll ask the next, then the next, and so on. Our goal is to get your selections to you as quickly as possible. For fastest delivery, keep your want list full.
Audio books are priced just like the rest of our books. We automatically calculate point values based on a number of factors, including; how old is the book, how popular, what is the retail price, has it won awards, and more.
Click the points link, which is next to your name when logged in.
No. Points cannot be used to pay for shipping.

It's easy. Simply enter the ISBN of each book using the form on the left side of the trade list page. The ISBN is a unique code for each book. Most books have them. You should be able to find the ISBN about three pages in from the front cover. It is on the same page as the copyright statement. It can also be found on the back cover of many books, right by the bar code.
Enter the UPC number from the back of the packaging. It is usually below the bar code. Make sure to include the small numbers on either side. If you do dot have the packaging, please look up the UPC on a site such as www.bn.com. We will add a look up feature in the future, so you can find UPCs by title.
Use the create your own listing link on the left side of the trade list page. Your new additions will be approved and added into inventory within 24 hours.
Sure, feel free to list any book you like. ARC's should be entered by using the create your own listing link on the trade list page. The ISBNs on ARCs are not always accurate, so create your own listing in the best way to go.
We lease a database of over 5 million books. It is the same database used by large retailers, and sometimes there are mistakes. We'll fix whatever issue you find, just contact us, and let us know what needs to be changed.
You will earn points for each shipment as soon as it arrives. We track all shipments and will email you when it gets there.
You will receive "shipping alerts" via email from us when an item is wanted. The more demand there is for your titles, the more alerts you will receive. Shipping alerts are a 48-hour period for you to visit our site and agree to ship. If you don't act during this period, you may lose the opportunity and the system may issue the alert to a different member.
Shipping
We will send you an email when each of your items is requested. Go to your trade list, you will see a link above the book or DVD to get the postage. Print it on regular paper. There is no need to go to the post office, and no need to use your own stamps.
Be sure to package your items in a way that ensures they will not be damaged. You can purchase inexpensive bubble mailers from many retailers such as Office Depot, Staples, and your local stationery store. To save a few dollars, use creative shipping options from home. For example, you can wrap hardcover books in folded cardboard, or for paperbacks use several layers of brown paper bags. An important note: make sure no tape is covering the bar code or your shipment may not be tracked. This includes clear tape which could result in the ink of the bar code bleeding and becoming unreadable.
No, the shipping label you print will contain the correct postage for your item.
If you no longer have a requested item, please remove it from your trade list. We will ask another member to fulfill the request.
No. Print a shipping label with free postage directly from our website on plain paper. Tape it to your package, and leave it for your letter carrier, or drop it in any mailbox. This applies to books and DVDs of any weight, including those over one pound.
contact us, we will create the label for you, and email you a copy. That way you can print and ship when you return.
Please let the shipping opportunity expire. That way our system will automatically try to get the requester another item on his/her want list. You will get another alert to ship if no one else does, or if another member selects it. If you are on vacation, you can Pause Your Account now, and select a day for it to automatically reactivate at the end of your vacation. When you pause, your books and DVDs are taken out of circulation, and you will not miss shipping alerts.
Shipping alerts expire after 48 hours to give other members the chance to ship. You will get another alert to ship if the request is not quickly fulfilled by other members, or, if another member selects your item.
Sorry, shipments can only be made with our shipping labels. The labels include track & confirm which helps automate the trading process, ensures your package gets there safely, and also makes sure you get credit for the shipment. Additionally, there is about $1 profit built into each shipping charge (on average), which will eventually help to offset our cost of providing you with this service.
contact us with the title of the item as soon as possible. We will cancel the shipment, let the recipient know, and will try to get them a copy from another shipper. An important note: once the label is generated we pay for the postage. Members that do this frequently will have less opportunity to participate and may be charged for the postage that was created but not used.
Yes, you can get a free copy of your shipping label for 48 hours after you try to print. Go to Track Shipments and you will see a link to get the copy. If it is past 48 hours, contact us.
In rare cases, our database has the wrong weight. If your shipment is returned for insufficient postage, or your mail carrier says you must add more, please put on the additional postage. Then let us know. We will reimburse you and fix our database so others do not face the same issue.
If you created postage for two items which are both going to the same person, you can ship them together and save the receiver the cost of one shipment. This can only be done if the weight on either of the labels is sufficient to cover both items, or, if you'd like to add the difference. If you do this, contact us, so we can make sure you earn credit for both shipments.
No please don't. The post office may charge you for priority mail. Even if you use the boxes inside out, they may charge you.
Secret Sauce
Give book and movie lovers a simple trading system and great customer service.
Bookins' resident PhD, Boaz, came up with wonderful technology to make sure you are always treated as good as, or better then you treat everyone else. The more you contribute to everyone's enjoyment (by shipping promptly, offering quality items, etc.) the more opportunities you'll have to participate. Conversely, bad apples are given less opportunity to participate, and eventually weeded out.
The goal of our service is first to provide a worry-free trading system for book and movie lovers, and second to eventually make a profit. On average, we make about $1 of the $4.49 shipping fee. That is after we pay for the postage itself, delivery confirmation, credit card fees, and fee for printing prepaid postage. This $1 covers overhead and salaries and, eventually, any profits we make.
Our automated technology tries to increase your overall satisfaction with the system while keeping books and movies flowing. Members who contribute to everyone's enjoyment (for example, by always shipping quality books, and DVDs that arrive undamaged) have more opportunity to participate, while members who cause dissatisfaction have less. When selecting trading partners, the system takes all that into account as well as the supply/demand of each item, proximity of traders, and how long you have been waiting to ship and receive.
We're not really sure ourselves, but it is catchy. Play it by clicking here. It was a gift from Jared Nissim from www.thelunchclub.com. He wrote it, sang it, and played all the instruments. If you like it, let him know.
Yes, very much. We know most people are busy and do not have time to chase down trading partners, follow-up on missing shipments, or worry about getting a fair deal on an exchange. With that in mind, we have simplified person-to-person trading by replacing the work and uncertainty with an enjoyable experience. Save your free time for reading and watching movies. We'll take care of the trading.
